Ragusa Ibla at a glance

Ragusa Ibla is one of the baroque towns that were rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. Together with Modica, Scicli and five other towns, Ragusa belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto", inscribed in 2002. The listing covers designated parts and monuments, not every street of the municipality.

The centrepiece is the Duomo di San Giorgio. Do not mix it up with the church of the same name in Modica: this one stands in Ragusa Ibla and was designed by Rosario Gagliardi. Most visitors combine it with the Giardino Ibleo, the public garden of Ibla. This guide is independent and not the official Ragusa tourism site.

What to see in Ragusa Ibla

Three stops that fit into a half day.

Duomo di San Giorgio

The cathedral sits at Salita Duomo 13. Gagliardi drew the design in 1738 and the building was finished in 1775. Groups can arrange visits to the reliquary and the Gagini retable by contacting the cathedral beforehand.

Museo San Giorgio

The museum is separate from the church. Its entrance is at Salita Duomo 15, near the side door. Its hours are short and in the morning, so plan it first.

Giardino Ibleo

A public garden with a war memorial. The regional tourism portal lists the churches of San Vincenzo Ferreri, San Giacomo and the Capuchin church as part of the same area. Do not count on all of them being open at once.

Opening times: church, museum and Mass

Getting to Ragusa Ibla from Modica

A station called Ibla is no proof that trains stop there today. Since 15 June 2026 the railway between Syracuse and Modica has run on published works timetables with replacement buses, and no end date is given. In the published changes, train R 12929 leaves Ragusa at 07:34 and reaches Modica at 08:00, which is 26 minutes. That is the direction Ragusa to Modica, and it does not mean a daily service. Check the current timetable before you go.

Driving is the more flexible option, and the details for cars, parking and the restricted zone in Modica are on our page on getting to Modica. If you are still choosing a base, see where to stay in Modica. Coming from the airport, read about Catania Airport first.

Road closure until 30 October 2026

The municipality reported on 7 October 2026 a temporary closure of the Strada Comunale S. Antonio to Stazione Ibla until 30 October 2026, 20:00. This is one road, not the whole quarter of Ibla. If you drive, follow the local signs.

Combine it with other baroque towns

Noto is the other well-known baroque town of the region; it has its own guide on Noto and the baroque southeast. Scicli fits a separate day.

Ragusa Ibla: frequently asked questions

Is the Duomo di San Giorgio in Ragusa the same as the one in Modica?

No. They share a name. The Ragusa Ibla cathedral was designed by Rosario Gagliardi in 1738 and finished in 1775. The Modica church stands on Corso San Giorgio and is covered on our page about things to do in Modica.

When can I visit the Museo San Giorgio?

The operator lists 10:00โ€“12:30 from Easter to the end of October. From November to Easter it opens on Saturday and Sunday only. Groups can ask for other visits.

Can I visit the church during Mass?

The times of 18:00 and 19:00 on weekdays and the holiday Masses are services, not visiting hours. Plan a sightseeing visit outside them.

Does the garden cost anything?

The Giardino Ibleo is reported as free, open daily from 08:00 to 20:00. Hours can change, so check on site.

Is the whole of Ibla closed to traffic in October 2026?

No. The reported closure concerns one road, the Strada Comunale S. Antonio to Stazione Ibla, until 30 October 2026 at 20:00.
